Slave 1

The Slave 1 is a highly modified Kuat Systems Engineering Firespray-class patrol and attack craft. It was used originally for Republic law enforcement before it came into possession of Jango Fett, who outfitted it with weapons of all sorts. His son/unaltered clone, Boba Fett, inherited the Slave 1 from his father Jango. Since then the ship has been improved and customized for the needs of the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy.Pursuit_over_Geonosis

The most famous scene with Jango in the pilot seat was the dogfight with Obi-Wan’s Jedi Starfighter (delta-7 aether-sprite class light interceptor) in the asteroid field over Geonosis. Jango exhausted every resource in his grasp to capture Obi-Wan: first lasers, then charges, and finally a heat-seeking missile.

The most famous bounty Boba achieved with the Slave 1 was tracking and capturing the Millennium Falcon, and bringing Han Solo to Cloud City (Bespin). Possibly the most iconic scene in The Empire Strikes Back was the carbon-freeze chamber, where Han got frozen into a block of carbonite. (I couldn’t get a proper picture of that scene, so I chose this one instead).

Here are the weapons that brought this ship to victory so many times.

Laser cannons: the Slave 1 has two rotating twin laser cannons on the end of the nose. Interestingly, although it’s a fact that they are laser cannons, they were never fired in the films or the Clone Wars TV series.

Screen Shot 2016-03-20 at 10.20.13 AM.pngProton torpedoes: the Slave 1 has two torpedo launchers on the very tip of the nose (a concealed turret). Proton torpedoes are heavier firepower than standard laser cannons.

Tractor beam: tractor beams pull in ships or floating objects. Boba’s ship has one on the bottom of the nose, right under the lasers and torpedoes.

Ion cannons: Boba replaced the hidden laser cannons seen in the very first picture with hidden ion cannons simply for weapons diversity. Ion cannons shoot highly charged plasma to disable enemy ships without destroying them. He replaced it at about the time he painted it red and green, (before that it was blue and gray).

Heat-seeking missile: heat-seekers are a type of homing missile that follows enemy ships and detonates on impact. The Slave 1 has two of them.

Seismic charges: seen in Attack of the Clones, Jango used seismic charge to detonate Obi-Wan’s ship in Geonosis’s asteroid field. Had the bright blue shockwave hit the ship, it would have sliced it cleanly in half, as demonstrated by several asteroids it hit.

How Jango Fett Actually Died

Jango Fett’s death has been hated by fans ever since Attack of the Clones was released. Truth is, if we’re gonna discuss lame deaths, we’d better get to Boba Fett. No matter the circumstances, its always better to be killed by a Jedi than a blind, oblivious man with a stick.

Here I will explain how Jango Fett, Mandalorian warrior, clone template, and more than a mindless mercenary, was killed when he brought a gun to a sword fight.

jango20feet

To say that Jango Fett simply stood there, ignoring the fact that he could have flew away with his jetpack, and waited to be decapitated by Mace Windu is a terrible understatement. In short, he intended to blast off, but that rhino creature busted his jetpack.

Here’s what happened.

During the First Battle of Geonosis, Mace Windu dropped his lightsaber. Jango Fett leaped after Mace’s dropped lightsaber, but Mace pulls it away with the Force.Screen Shot 2016-01-06 at 4.01.52 PM
Jango, unable to get up from the fall quickly enough, is charged by the reek, a three-horned, rhino-like creature native to Geonosis.

The reek broke his jetpack, so that he could not fly. Jango did not know this, and neither did Mace.Screen Shot 2016-01-06 at 4.32.11 PM.png

When Mace ran toward him, Jango intended to keep shooting at Mace and than blast off at the last minute. He’d done it before when fighting Obi-Wan, he thought he could do it again. Except his jetpack was busted. Had Jango known this, he would have used a flamethrower or projectile dart, or something similar to keep Mace at bay long enough to escape by foot.

Earlier in the movie, the trick had worked fine.

Jango tries to blast off several times, but his jetpack shuts off automatically after a fraction of a second so as not to blow up.Screen Shot 2016-01-06 at 5.09.52 PM.png

After that, well, you know what happens.

Thanks for reading this article! I hope this will help explain why the second best Mandalorian died the way he did.

Don’t forget to check out my previous article, a review of the Force Awakens. It’s probably one of the most exciting post so far, and it’s got zero views. :O

Stay tuned for my next article: an analysis of Boba Fett’s  arsenal of weaponry.

May the Force be with you!

The Force Awakens is here, and it’s amazing!

Being able to get to the movies and watch The Force Awakens on the third day after its release was a pleasant surprise for me: originally, we weren’t going to watch it until the 28th, (tenth day), but there was space in the theater, and it was raining anyway.

The Force Awakens

Before anything else, I will issue a SPOILER ALERT!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT (OR WILL NEVER) SEE THE MOVIE.

Luke Skywalker has vanished. Those were the first words of the opening crawl. That was when there was no more doubt about The Force Awakens.

4305726816697531There has been an awakening, in both the light and the dark. And the light side has awakened in Rey–big time. Kylo Ren was severely injured from Chewie’s shot, and unfocused (he just murdered his father). Nonetheless, Rey defeating him only a day after discovering her force abilities is no mean feat. Is she Luke’s daughter? That would explain a lot. (The reason she is not of Organa/Solo parentage is that Leia and Han would not care so much for their first child (Ben Solo/Kylo Ren), that they would forget about the other.)

Many fans, including me, were fooled by the trailer and thought Finn was the new Jedi. However, we were right in that he is a stormtrooper (trooper FN-2187) who defected and joined Resistance.

Finn and Poe

Despite holding the symbolism to the first movie in each previous trilogy, TFA also brings in entirely new elements to the plot. Poe Dameron is one of those elements. Leader of Black Squadron, he entrusted BB-8 with the last piece of the map to Luke Skywalker.

0897df649696479d436f329792c94067BB-8 completes the droid due to a trio, immediately accepted by the other two. Despite playing a central role in TFA, (holding the remaining piece of the map to Luke Skywalker, who has mysteriously vanished), what BB-8 does best is simply being cute.

Maz Kanata resembles Yoda in more than just looks. She is not a Force user, but she is wise in its ways.

(From left): Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren, General Hux

Lets talk about the baddies, leaving Kylo Ren last (you’ll see why).

Supreme Leader Snoke is the one I don’t know what to do with. The ten meter tall holograph we see is probably not his actual size, but it is intimidating. (Maybe he’s tiny, and that’s why he likes appearing big.) Either way, he is deep in the dark side and as much of a threat as the Emperor, if not more.

star-wars-the-force-awakens-captain-phasma-gwendoline-christiePhasma, captain of the First Order’s troops, is not nearly as awesome as she could have been. Some posters, including the one on my door, (not the one pictured above) lead to speculation that there may be a romance between the her and Kylo Ren, which would be interesting as we haven’t seen one between villains in the Star Wars galaxy. This turned out to be a false alarm. In the end, she was thrown into a trash compactor by Han, before the planet imploded, and although she may have gotten away, her chances aren’t too good.

General Hux delivers a speech to the armies of the First Order

General Hux, basically a younger, and far more brilliant version of Grand Moff Tarkin, is as good as promised. He has a lust for power, and is desperate to restore the First Order to the glory of the Empire. Like Phasma, he probably died when the planet imploded.

starwarstheforceawakens-kylorenWhenever a new villain is introduced, we need a demonstration of how evil they are. Vader killed Obi-Wan. Maul killed Qui-Gon Jinn. But both of those characters had only been known for one movie (at the time; Obi Wan was made legend by the prequels, but we saw him die before they were released). Han Solo had been known and loved throughout the original trilogy, becoming everyone’s favourite smuggler-turned-hero. There has been an awakening in the light and the dark. And the dark has awakened in Kylo Ren. Chewie’s shot of fury hit him square in the chest, and he hardly took a step back. Kylo Ren is not a Sith, but he is a threat to the Republic.

“Chewie, we’re home”

Which brings us to Han Solo. Han’s death was perfect. We basically knew he was going to die in TFA, but I was afraid he was going to go in a shootout with stormtroopers or by crashing the Falcon. But to be murdered in cold blood by his own son was not one of the likely candidates. Kylo Ren is deep in the dark side, but he’s no Darth Vader. Even Vader was not beyond redemption, so we can excuse Han trying to help him. Ren removes his helmet, and while he may have been faking, I believe he really was unsure of which path to take. And in one fateful moment, he ignites his lightsaber into his father’s heart.

Overall, The Force Awakens was a success. The plot, dialogue, screenplay, soundtrack, everything. JJ Abrams did a good job, and with episode 8 coming May 2017, the third generation of fans has started.

Star Wars is no longer a movie; its a culture. And forty years later, its still expanding.

19 Bits of Facts and Trivia About the 6 Star Wars Films

Some facts and trivia about the Star Wars films you may not know:

  1. Wedge Antilles is the only character who takes part in and survives all three major battles in the original trilogy
  2. R2D2 and C-3PO are the only characters who appear in every Star Wars movie. 3PO is the only one who is played by the same actor, Anthony Daniels.
  3. The original costume for 3PO limited the actor’s movements so much, he face-planted several times when the set quivered slightly. In another scene, our famous Goldenrod could not hold his comm without it being taped to his shiny hand.
  4. R2 and 3PO are seen as a cameo in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark.r2-d2-and-c3po-are-in-indiana-jones
  5. The sound of the hovering battle tanks used by the battle droids in The Phantom Menace was created by running an electric razor around a metal salad bowl and then digitally lowering the pitch.
  6. A bear was deprived of food for a day and then presented with a small amount of bread to get a Wookiee sound. The bear was then fed properly.
  7. The original idea of Chewbacca was used as Zeb Orelios in Star Wars Rebels. Han Solo was meant to be a green alien with bumpy skin.
  8. Han Solo’s “I know” line was created by Harrison Ford when he refused to say anything else. It’s become an iconic Star Wars quote.
  9. It took 6-10 people to work the full-sized animatronic of Jabba the Hutt. The frogs he ate were not real.
  10. Return of the Jedi was going to be called Revenge of the Jedi, but Lucas decided Jedi do not seek revenge.
  11. A cameo of the Millenium Falcon can be seen landing on Corucsant in Revenge of the Sith. This is before Lando or Han owned it.
  12. “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” or a variation of it is spoken in every movie.
  13. The Phantom Menace’s production sets were built only as high as the tops of the actors’ heads and CGI filled in the rest. But Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn) was so tall that they needed to build things taller and this cost the production another $150,000 in construction.Qui-Gon_Jinn
  14. Hayden Christiansen played Darth Vader in Revenge of the Sith instead of to David Prowse who previously did the role. Hayden apparently begged Lucas to let him play him. The suit had to be redesigned to accommodate his smaller stature than Prowse’s.
  15. R2D2 is taller than Wicket.
  16. Darth maul has ten horns.
  17. He was also a violation of the Rule of Two, while Darth Plagueis was alive.
  18. In Attack of the Clones, Jar Jar puts forth the motion that gives Palpatine supreme powers. This means that Jar Jar, one of the most universally hated characters in the Star Wars films is responsible for the fall of the Republic and the massacre of the Jedi. Unless he really was the Sith Lord.
  19. Extra for nerds: According to a famous theory originally found on Reddit, Jar Jar Binks is actually a Sith Lord. “he and Palpatine were likely in collaboration from the very beginning, and it’s entirely possible that Palpatine was a subordinate underling to Binks throughout both trilogies.”jarjar
